Solo Museum Exhibition — February 4 - May 3, 2009
The Charles Allis Art Museum presents The Natural Motif: New Drawings by Natalie Settles with an opening reception Wednesday, February 4, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Settles' drawings use Victorian botanical patterns to describe the modern search for scientific patterns in genetics and microbiology. The work stems from her time in Madison, Wisconsin, and Cambridge, England--both hubs of biological research, the latter also a repository of Victorian decor. The artist layers hulks of magnified plant detritus and decorative motifs, creating subtle distinctions and new relationships among the images. Settles will show over 20 graphite and watercolor works on paper in her solo museum debut. This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. The museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Museum admission is $5 adults; $3 seniors, veterans, and students; free to members, active military, and children. Press Release
